Portable appliance testing is
abbreviated as PAT. The correct
term for the whole process is
"In-service Inspection & Testing
of Electrical Equipment" as
defined by IET/IEE.
British law (the Electricity at
Work Regulations 1989)
requires that all electrical
systems and electrical
appliances are maintained to
prevent danger. Private houses
are not covered by this
legislation,
The HSE and the local authority
are responsible for the policing
of this legislation.
Where a landlord provides an
electrical appliance as part of a
tenancy, the law expects the
appliance will be maintained in
a safe condition that will not
cause harm to the tenant.
Failure to do so could lead to
the landlord being sued for
negligence. Portable appliance
testing is always best practice
for landlords.
Health and safety regulations
require that electrical
appliances are safe and
maintained to prevent harm to
workers.
